Ok I'll start: Some Excerpts:
Discussion: Da Vinci Code by Dan BrownDiscussion: When I first heard about the book, I thought well, nice theme..and then the reviews came out. I've read some reviews and I decided, what's the furor all about this book? So, I decided to buy one from a local bookstore and then the fascination begins.
Dan Brown presents an unusual story, about a Harvard symbologist caught in a web of puzzling myteries. The action was past-paced and the narration paints a richly-textured sceneries. What made it a literary "great" is the inferences about our Religious history. I am a Catholic, nut upon reading this book, I immediately questioned my beliefs. What if the assumptions in this book is true? Could we have our faith destroyed by it? The book presented some strong contradiction of what we're supposed to believe in, yet Brown waves his magic in an entertaining way. References to familiar objects as the Mona Lisa and a deep discussion of the true meaning of the Holy Grail is incredibly enlightening.
In the end, whether or not you believe in it, the book is immensely well written and I personally find reading about it rewarding.
Rating: 5

My friend's faves (barbara) Here are my two most favorite books, an excerpt & my rating/reason for them each. Excerpt: My Review: I love this book for a few reasons and one reason is solely because I am envious of Sarah Dessen's writing style. She has completely captured the essence of teenage romance, life, angst & family-related situations. You can really get into the heads of each of her characters. Each individual is so different, yet so complex it's amazing how much you feel that you actually KNOW each character. Their history's are nothing alike and this book is really set apart from others to me, because, while this is still a young-adult romance novel; there is a message behind it. And you do learn, live and feel from this novel. I love this novel and all of Sarah Dessen's writing. My Rating: 4-5 It all depends on the books you enjoy reading. NEXT BOOK: Excerpt: It was 7 minutes after midnight. The dog was lying on the grass in the middle of the lawn in front of Mrs Shears' house. Its eyes were closed. It looked as if it was running on its side, the way dogs run when they think they are chasing a cat in a dream. But the dog was not running or asleep. The dog was dead. There was a garden fork sticking out of the dog. The points of the fork must have gone all the way through the dog and into the ground because the fork had not fallen over. I decided that the dog was probably killed with the fork because I could not see any other wounds in the dog and I do not think you would stick a garden fork into a dog after it had died for some other reason, like cancer for example, or a road accident. But I could not be certain about this. I went through Mrs Shears' gate, closing it behind me. I walked onto her lawn and knelt beside the dog. I put my hand on the muzzle of the dog. It was still warm. The dog was called Wellington. It belonged to Mrs Shears who was our friend. She lived on the opposite side of the road, two houses to the left. Wellington was a poodle. Not one of the small poodles that have hairstyles but a big poodle. It had curly black fur, but when you got close you could see that the skin underneath the fur was a very pale yellow, like chicken. I stroked Wellington and wondered who had killed him, and why. 3 My name is Christopher John Francis Boone. I know all the countries of the world and their capital cities and every prime number up to 7,057. Eight years ago, when I first met Siobhan, she showed me this picture and I knew that it meant 'sad,' which is what I felt when I found the dead dog. Then she showed me this picture -Insert Smiley Face Here (the image wouldn't show up)- and I knew that it meant 'happy', like when I'm reading about the Apollo space missions, or when I am still awake at 3 am or 4 am in the morning and I can walk up and down the street and pretend that I am the only person in the whole world. Then she drew some other pictures but I was unable to say what these meant. I got Siobhan to draw lots of these faces and then write down next to them exactly what they meant. I kept the piece the piece of paper in my pocket and took it out when I didn't understand what someone was saying. But it was very difficult to decide which of the diagrams was most like the face they were making because people's faces move very quickly. When I told Siobhan that I was doing this, she got out a pencil and another piece of paper and said it probably made people feel very and then she laughed. So I tore the original piece of paper up and threw it away. And Siobhan apologised. And now if I don't know what someone is saying I ask them what they mean or I walk away.
My Review: The author, Mark Haddon, works with autistic children and that's where the inspiration for this book came from. If you have ever wanted to read a completely off-the-wall, yet a book that makes total sense; this one is definitely for you. The way Haddon captures the thinking process of an autistic person is quite frankly amazing. Honestly, I never knew how an autistic person thought, felt, what they experienced, anything like that until I read this book; and I even have a cousin who I am very close to whom is autistic. The chapters are numbered in non numeric sequencial order, but rather as prime number sequencial order. The prime numbered chapters are also paired with an extensive amount of pictures to really show you how the main character is thinking. It's really neat. If you want an amazing book to read that will keep you entertained and thinking, please, please read this book. :] My Rating: 5 - 6 if I could.
you should join shelfari (for book discussion) or bookmooch (for book swap/trade) i'm a member on those 2 sites. haha (mag-plug daw ba lol) my current favorite series is The Maximum Ride by James Patterson rating: 5 and a half stars ************ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximum_RideThe main plot follows the adventures of Maximum Ride, more widely known as Max, and her group of human-avian hybrids (known as the flock), who have been the subjects of experiments leaving them 98% human and 2% bird. The flock is constantly being hunted down by Erasers, human-lupine (wolf) hybrids, that were also created at the School, a secret facility in Death Valley, California, "where a bunch of mad scientists fool around with gene splicing and other complex sciences." Upon being rescued from the School, they settle down in a house in the mountains of Colorado with their saviour, Jeb Batchelder. After being discovered by the Erasers, Angel, the youngest of the flock, is kidnapped by them (in the first book). The rest of the flock sets out on an action-packed adventure to liberate her. The series then takes them all over the world, from California to New York in the first novel, to Washington D.C. in the second, to Europe in the third, and Antarctica in the fourth. ********** it's one of the best action-adventure books i've read (especially since i'm not really a fan of those genres) but this series is this author's best. i wasn't able to sleep until i finish the first book, and when i did i wanted to read the second book badly haha.

For those who loves reading but doesn't actually have the time to read much but can't afford to dwell in anticipation of "what happens next" .
"A Painted House" - John Grisham (4 stars)
It's a good book that's not too engaging. It's also good for night reading. The words are simple enough for everyone as well. Not good for kids though because there are some violence and sexual stuff(though very mild sexual stuff). It's not a romantic novel, It's a story about innocense and how a child experienced more than enough for his age.

This book was introduced by my parents when I was still a student! I read it though, I'm not fond of reading at that time.. then I feel in love with it! It was embarrassing to read because it's personal and basically truthful! I believe it's not about the author.. it's a divine intervention because it's practically impossible to capture millions of hearts with a single book! MY FAVORITE QUOTES IN THE BOOK: 1. Begins with a phrase.. IT'S NOT ABOUT YOU! The purpose of life is far greater that one's own personal fulfillment ( I love it, it's true, LIFE is not selfish) 2. page 43, paragraph 3.. "A very important test is how you act when you can't feel God's presence in your life." and " When you understand that life is a test, you realize that nothing is insignificant in your life." 3. page 75 first paragraph.." You don't bring glory or pleasure to God by hiding your abilities or by trying to be someone else. You only bring him enjoyment by being you. Anytime you reject any part of yourself, you are rejecting God's wisdom and sovereignty in creating you." There are lots of quotes I love in this book.. I recommend this to everyone.. It's a 40days reflection with 40 chapters, one chapter per day!
