As I'm sure most of you have seen, "Crush" has a very good chance of debuting at #1 on the Hot 100 next week (if you haven't - check out those threads). I know that everyone thinks it would be cool if the single debuted at #1, but I don't think most people realize how significant this is and the impact that it would have. This would be ONLY non-coronation single from an Idol contestant to EVER hit #1 on the Hot 100, let alone debut at #1 on the Hot 100. Kelly, Clay, Fantasia, Carrie, and Taylor all hit #1 with their coronation songs. But none of them ever hit #1 on the Hot 100 again. I know that is probably surprising, especially with Kelly since she had so many pop hits, but none of her non-coronation songs ("Since U Been Gone," "Breakaway," etc.) ever hit #1 on the Hot 100. And Jordin's "No Air" didn't hit #1 either - it peaked at #3.
A debut at #1 would not only be the best non-coronation debut for a former Idol contestant, but it would be the best chart position EVER for a non-coronation single. This is huge. This would be the most successful Idol debut and chart position ever - and he didn't even win the title.
Also, brand new artists don't debut at #1 on the Hot 100 with their first single. It may have happened at some point, but I can't think of an example. At the very least, it is very, very rare. A #1 debut would be huge. The whole music world will take notice. This is honestly a career maker for him. This will end, here and now, any real debate over whether he is marketable and can succeed in the current music world. This is really big guys. But to keep things in perspective, a #2 debut will probably have pretty much the same effect anyway (but #1 would sound and be so much better).
Let's help get David a #1 debut! Buy and gift as much as you can today and tomorrow!

UPDATE:
The digital download numbers will be out Wednesday night and the Billboard chart on Thursday. We will have a pretty good idea where he will land after seeing the raw digital sales numbers on Wednesday.
Gah, I'm so excited for this..there's a very good chance that Crush will debut at No. 1.. :spaz:

Interesting info:
Even more proof of how amazing a #1 debut would be. I didn't collect this info, but here is a list of ALL the songs that have debuted at #1 - there have only been 15. With the exception of the Idol coronation songs, the last song to debut at #1 came out in 1998:
Michael Jackson — "You Are Not Alone" (September 2, 1995) (released Aug 15)
Mariah Carey — "Fantasy" (September 30, 1995) (released Sept 12)
Whitney Houston — "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" (November 25, 1995) (released Nov 7)
Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men — "One Sweet Day" (December 2, 1995) (released Nov 14)
Puff Daddy and Faith Evans featuring 112 — "I'll Be Missing You" (June 14, 1997) (released June 1)
Mariah Carey — "Honey" (September 13, 1997) (released Aug 26)
Elton John — "Candle in the Wind 1997" / "Something About the Way You Look Tonight" (October 11, 1997) (released Sept 13)
Céline Dion — "My Heart Will Go On" (February 28, 1998) (released Dec 8)
Aerosmith — "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" (September 5, 1998) (released Aug 18)
Lauryn Hill — "Doo Wop (That Thing)" (November 14, 1998) (released Oct 27)
Céline Dion and R. Kelly — "I'm Your Angel" (December 5, 1998) (released Nov 9)
Clay Aiken — "This is the Night" (June 28, 2003) (released June 10)
Fantasia — "I Believe" (July 10, 2004) (released June 22)
Carrie Underwood — "Inside Your Heaven" (July 2, 2005) (released June 14)
Taylor Hicks — "Do I Make You Proud" (July 1, 2006) (released June 13)
props to aifan
